Twin brothers, Jack and Frank Blythe, are continuing the family tradition in the construction industry which started in the 1920's. After working in the family business in the late 1960's, 1970's and 1980's, they formed Blythe Development in 1989 to focus on providing first class service in construction infrastructure. High quality work performed in a timely manner and at a competitive price has been the foundation of the company. In 1994, the brothers created Blythe Brothers Asphalt Company to further enhance the capabilities and provide a full service site work package which includes asphalt production. Today the companies annually perform over $230 million of site work and roadway construction, employ over 900 employees and utilize over 350 major pieces of heavy construction equipment. They have been ranked in the top 100 largest privately held corporations in NC for the past 13 years and continues to climb. The Blythe brothers pride themselves in maintaining a family atmosphere within the company and responding to and treating their employees well so they can continue developing the end product in a quality manner.

Frank Blythe
Luke Blythe | Vice President of Operations

Years of Experience: 20 Education: B.A., Economics, UNC-Chapel Hill
Luke has been working with Blythe Development ever since he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Luke has quickly moved up in the company starting as a Project Engineer to his current position as Vice President of Operations. His project experience includes the widening of Highway 51 South in Pineville, NC; Ridge Street Extension in Stanly County, NC; Hwy 421 in Watauga, NC which consists of widening a one mile stretch of Highway 421. Luke has managed projects of various sizes in NC and SC ranging from $1 million to over $30 million. As Division Manager for the last five years, Luke managed a Construction Division that completed $75 million per year in construction projects and as Vice President of Operations the company has performed over $200 million per year over the last two years. Luke was also the Design Build Project Manager for Blythe Development’s first design build, Widening Hwy 73 in Mecklenburg County.

Joey Dodson
Joey Dodson | Chief Financial Officer / IT Manager

Years of Experience: 26  Education: B.S., Business Administration/Accounting
Joey graduated from Winthrop University in 1994 and began his career as an internal auditor for a small community. He worked at several different financial institutions before being named the Chief Financial Officer for Park Meridian Bank. Joey served as CFO for Park Meridian Bank until the bank was acquired in 2002. Joey joined Blythe Development in 2002 as the Chief Financial Officer. He has helped manage the growth of Blythe Development from $65 million to almost $230 million in annual revenue.

Stoney Bumgardner
Stoney Bumgardner | Division Manager - Estimating

Years of Experience: 26  Education: Civil Engineering, Gaston College
Military: USMC
Stoney joined Blythe Development in 2007 as an estimator. Stoney began his career in the field at F.T. Williams in 1994. He worked his way up through the ranks from the field into estimating and then to vice president of operation for Dirtworks, Inc. in 1996. Since then Stoney has served as the lead estimator on various commercial, heavy highway, design build and joint venture projects ranging from $500K to $175 million. Stoney became the division manager of the estimating department for Blythe Development Co. in January 2016.

Bart DeVore
Bart DeVore | Division Manager - Private

Years of Experience: 33  Education: BSET Civil Engineering, UNCC
Started in 1986 at Blythe Industries in Charlotte, NC as a Project Engineer and advanced to Project Manager where majority of experience was in the NCDOT heavy-highway public market. In 1997 he moved to Blythe Development as a Project Manager and managed mainly private projects along with several NCDOT and City of Charlotte Projects. In 2002 he moved to Tennessee to take a Vice President position for a small grading contractor and grew business from 6 million to 35 million within six years. In 2012 he returned to Blythe Development Company and is currently Division Manager for Charlotte Area Private Projects.

John Cassell
John Cassell | Division Manager - Residential

John has worked for Blythe Development Company for a combined tenure of 13+ years serving as a Division Manager from 1991 through 1998 and again from 2010 until now. John began his career practicing Landscape Architecture in North Carolina and has had the opportunity to work in various roles throughout his career as a land planner, golf course designer, real estate development manager, land acquisition manager and construction manager. He has had the great fortune to work on a variety of projects ranging from single family subdivisions, multi-family apartments, commercial and retail developments, golf courses, “mixed use” master planned real estate developments as well as institutional and industrial projects. As a Division Manager, John is responsible for overseeing the overall management of construction projects ranging in value from $500K to $10 million with a total annual volume of +/- $65 million.

Richard Kirkman
Richard Kirkman | Division Manager - Public Division

Years of Experience: 28  Education: B.S., Civil Engineering
Richard joined Blythe Development in 2011 after 19 years of serving in various management and estimating roles in the heavy-highway construction industry throughout the Southeast. His primary focus in the past has been bridge construction. Richard has served as an estimator and project manager for numerous bridge replacement projects throughout NC and SC, ranging in value from $500K to $10M. Richard is responsible for starting and growing a Bridge Division within Blythe Development, which was recently awarded its first bridge replacement project for NCDOT. In addition to bridge replacement projects, the Bridge Division will focus on all types of concrete structures, including: retaining walls, culverts, tunnels and pedestrian structures. Richard is a registered Professional Engineer in NC and also holds a NC General Contractor’s license.

Matthew Spencer
Matthew Spencer | Asphalt Operations Manager

Matthew has worked on highway projects for GDOT, SC DOT and NC DOT as well as many project in the commercial and residential sector. Matthew began working for Blythe Brothers Asphalt in 2006 with only one asphalt plant and 3 paving crews. Currently Blythe Brothers has 5 paving crews, 3 milling crews and 2 grading crews and 115 employees. Over the years Blythe Brothers has grown into the premier paving contractor in the Charlotte and surrounding markets. Blythe Brothers are paving major highways and roadways for clients like The City of Charlotte, NC DOT, and SC DOT.
